A Night of Infinite Expectation
by Stephen Damon
In the great silence
Of the forest at midnight
A lonesome sparrow sings
An a cappella song
Of seet seet seeets
Disrupting the repose
Of forest-dwelling spirits
Whose wandering footsteps
Can now be heard everywhere.
In a farmhouse down the road
An old Magnavox console
Blasts a late-night preacher’s
Last call for redemption.
Meanwhile, a country choir
Softly sings the last refrain
Of a long forgotten hymn
On this late December night
Of infinite expectation.
bows,
Stephen
